Boost Methane Oxidation Efficiency in Landfills with Digestate Biochar


WHAT TO CHANGE

  1. Substitute the commonly used Woody-Derived Biochar (WBC) with Digestate-Derived Biochar (DBC) in landfill cover soil.

  2. Prioritize biochar with higher ion-exchange capacity (CEC), as it enhances methane-oxidizing bacteria (MOB) growth.

  3. Consider DBC produced from food waste, which tends to have a higher micropore ratio, specific surface area, and richer functional groups than WBC.

WHAT YOU MIGHT SEE

  • A nearly twofold increase in cumulative methane oxidation mass (from 7.14 mg CH4 g−1 compared to WBC).

  • A shift in the dominant methane-oxidizing bacteria from Type II to Type I MOB. Type I MOB have more efficient metabolic pathways for methane oxidation, making them better suited for the job.
